BHUBANESWAR

It is the capital city of Orissa, the 11th largest state in Indian union. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the country with most modern facilities. Despite the tag of capital , the city houses hundreds of temples all over the place. Hence the city is refered to as the Temple City or the Cathedral city of India.

A traveler by air is welcomed by the soaring spire of the famous Lingaraj temple, the white domed peace Pagoda at Dhauli hills & the Ochre temple of Mahabir Jina on the Khadagir hills. These three also signify the presence of Hinduism, Budhism & Jainism which in turn helped orissa develop a tolerant culture, people & environment.
Bhubaneswar is the one & only mute witness to the famous & epic Kalinga War of the ancient India. The Kalinga War (261bc) converted the Emperor Ashoka from a butcher to an ambasodar of peace. The whole of Kalinga War has immortalized in the form of Ashokan Rock Edict at Dhauli, one of the earliest rock cut edicts in ancient history. The cave complex of Udaygiri & Khandagiri together presents high points of Orissa history, at the same time , throws light on the ancient civilization.

Attractions : Apart from the fact that Bhubaneswar is one of the most beautiful capital cities in India, it is also the Cathedral city or the Temple City of India. In other words , Bhubaneswar has more than five hundred temples to its possession . Visiting all of them is neither possible nor desireable considering the constraint of time. But definitely some of the most important temples of all time are worth visiting atleast once for their architectural magnificience.

Temples :

The Lingaraj Temple: This is the largest temple in Bhubaneswar. Built in 11th century AD, this 180ft massive structure has the architectural concentration all over the body.

The Rajarani Temple: This 11th century old temple is unparalled for its plastic art. It is unique because it does not have any deities for worship by the devotees.

The Mukteswar Temple: This 30 odd ft temple belongs to the 10th century AD . Though the temple is a smaller one, the art work on it is considered as one of the most beautiful in India.

The Vaital Temple: This temle is different from other temples in terms of architecture & style. The presiding deity, Chamunda, is also not a house hold figure in Hindu system of worship. The sculptures of the temple depict a rather strange synthesis of Saktism, Saivism & Mahayana Budhism.

NandanKanan: It is one of the major Zoos in the eastern region. Located in the vicinity (only 12kms) of Bhubaneswar, it is accessible round the year except on Mondays. The timings only vary according to the seasons - summer & winter. The artificial yet very spacious Zoo possesses a wide varieties of mammals, reptiles & birds from across the world. The White Tigers are a special attraction in this zoo. The Lion Safari gives very rare chance to a visitor to see the freely roaming majestic lions in the Safari. It is atleast a day’s programme for the visitors to see, enjoy , observe the diversity of species , as part of either creation or evolution, in a single day & at a single place.

KONARK

There are only three Sun temples in India, where temples have been constructed & dedicated to the Sun God. The Martand & Madeere Sun temples are hardly known to any body except for the local areas. But the Sun temple at Konark is not only a house hold name but a world famous monument. The black colour of the structure has earned it the name of Black Pagoda. Built in the 13th century AD, this temple still evokes a sense of pride in human genius & their achievement. At the same time it also flashes back of its look in its youth. Even after seven hundred years of its existence, it still imposes itself upon the visitors in no time.

If a thing of beauty is joy for ever, it is Konark. It is simply a masterpiece in terms architecture, sculpture & science. The majestic Sun temple was born when the Orissan art was at its peak.
The sculptural depictions touch every aspect of life of the then society at large.
Erottica ( scenes of love) apart from others is one of the finest sculptural depictions.

Architecturally it is designed to be a Chariot(car) with twelve (12) huge wheels on either side being pulled by seven (7) horses .

Scientifically, the Konark depicts the movement of the Sun from the rise to the set. The gigantic wheels depict the the division of time of the day.
All in all, the Konark is a price less wonder of time, definitely undefinable & undescribable. It is surely unbelievable unless & until one has a close view of this marvel with an unblinking gaze. And to underline this the world body has aptly declared the Konark Sun Temple THE WORLD HERITAGE MONUMENT.
